Learn to Knit, Crochet, or Sew!

Learning to knit, crochet, or sew is a great way to save yourself a bundle on cloth diapering. If you can do any or all of these things, you can make the majority (if not all) of your covers and even your wipes!

I can do all three, but I must say at this stage in the game, I am better at crocheting. I’ve been doing it for about 8 years now. I’ve been sewing longer, but the sewing machine is my nemesis, my kryptonite if you will. Lol. For some reason, I just cannot learn to use one. I mess it up. I can, however, sew by hand pretty well so I have sewn several pairs of fleece shorties and a ton of fleece soakers for my youngest.

If you can already knit, crochet, and/or sew, then I have a list of great sites for you where you can find free patterns for your soakers, shorties, or longies! I love free. I always get my yarn when it’s on sale or when I have a coupon. Just yesterday, I got some Paton’s wool for $4.50 and some Alpaca Love for $2.99! Woohoo! I’m still excited about those.

First, in the crochet world, I’ve come upon these two very straight forward patterns:

Easiest Crochet Wool Soaker Pattern: http://crochetcastle.wordpress.com/2009/04/17/easiest-crochet-wool-soaker-pattern/
Little Fire Crochet Soaker Pattern: http://withatangledskein.blogspot.com/2008/02/little-fire-crochet-soaker-pattern.html

There are a ton more patterns, those are just the two I’ve done so far (they’re pictured here sideways this morning in acrylic yarn, because I wanted to try out the patterns before committing my more expensive yarn to either project). You can find more crochet and knit patterns here:

Ravelry: http://www.ravelry.com/

Free Crochet Pattern Central: http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/
All Free Knit: http://www.allfreeknit.com/

If you’re still new to knitting or crocheting, there are tons of tutorials, videos, written instructions, etc to help you learn to knit, crochet, or even master new stitches within each. Here’s some that I’ve used:

Lionbrand: http://www.lionbrand.com/
Knitting Help: http://www.knittinghelp.com/
Knitty: http://www.knitty.com/

Finally, I’ve also got some of fleece soakers and shorties pictured here on this post today. I used the Katrina pattern for all of them and found it to be very easy and straight forward. You can find it here:

Shorties and Longies: http://katrinassqs.blogspot.com/2008/09/longies-pattern.html

I hope you’ve found all of this helpful! Feel free to add some links to other free patterns I might have missed. J Have a great day.

Thanks for the info! I do sew/knit/crochet, and this will be really helpful - at least once I can actually get back to my sewing machine... :)
