Fluff on a Dime

Raise your hand if you like free fluff! What about an entire stash, including pockets, for less than $200? Oh, you’re listening now. Seriously, I spent less than $200 of our personal family money on our fluffy stash, which includes 19 one-sized diapers, 2 sized diapers, 5 hemp doublers, 6 semi-fitteds, 15 infant prefolds, 6 premium prefolds, 4 Dappi covers, 2 fleece covers, 4 wrap-style covers, 4 dozen cloth wipes, 2 wet bags, and a pail liner. All of that is for one baby and none of it was used. Here’s how I did it.

1)Enter contests! Tons of blogs, including this one in the future, have contests where they are giving away free stuff like your favorite cloth diapering detergent, diapers, snappis, etc. For instance, Wee Little Changes (WLC) is running a contest right now on our blog. All you have to do is leave a comment on our Rockin' Green Giveaway post about your favorite Rockin' Green scent. Bam, you’re entered. I actually won three of my diapers entering contests, one Fuzzi Bunz medium and two Bumgenius one-sized.
2)Take advantage of the Friend Reward Program! Have you seen WLC’s reward program? You can earn points for a lot of different things like friend referrals, writing up a blog post for us to use, signing up for the newsletter, etc. Those points add up quickly and equal free stuff for you. Before working with April on this blog, I actually earned a free bag of Rockin’ Green detergent with her reward program. It was great!
3)Gift certificates are your friend. If you’re expecting around Christmas or your birthday or even having a baby shower before the big day, you can ask for gift cards and gift certificates to use toward (free-for-you) fluff. I did this a couple of Christmases ago when I was expecting my fourth child. I ended up getting more than a dozen one sized pocket diapers completely free to me. Yes, I paid for them with gift cards but it was gift money!
4)Free shipping should always be one of the first things you look for in a store. Even a low amount for shipping eventually adds up to big money. And if you’re shopping around looking for the best price, be sure you consider the amount you’ll pay for shipping somewhere else in addition to the price of the product.
5)Consider making some of your fluff. There are a lot of free patterns and directions out there for making some of your own stuff. I bought some fleece on sale to make some covers. I used some old receiving blankets to make a bunch of wipes and even made some fitteds and semi-fitteds from them too. It saved me a ton since all I paid for was the fleece, the thread, and some of my time. I already had all those receiving blankets!

So now that you’ve read my tips, get to work saving yourself some money and finding ways to earn some free fluff. And if you have any ideas you want to share with us, let us know in the comments section!

Yeah, I just started getting really into entering the blog contests, can't believe how many are out there! One just leads to another. I actually won the first one I entered (two Knickernappies diapers with inserts)!! It was thrilling!
Thanks for all the tips. I'm going to definitely try all of them. I just bought some fleece to cut up for liners but want to try making some covers as well. I'm scared, though, because I am SO not crafty!

I'm so glad you liked it! I'm not the most amazing seamstress either, but I found this free pattern online and decided to give it a try. It really wasn't hard at all and even has pictures to walk you through the process. Maybe you want to check it out? http://katrinassqs.blogspot.com/2007/10/free-soaker-pattern.html

i spent almost two months on giveaways and only scored 4 diapers... I ended up getting most of mine from various specials or off ClothDiaperNation forum (used or very nice diaper-shop owners). I really wish I had gotten into cloth diapering while I was still pregnant instead of waiting until baby was several months old - i would have more time, and i could ask for gift certificates, etc.

I think i'll join your friends rewards program though! :)

I join every contest I can. I've won diapers, wipes, bum cleaner, etc. Also until March 31st head over to Franklin goose and review diapers and other 'stuff' and get some cash for each review. It goes as a credit on your account. You're welcome, all you mommies who need more fluff!

Jill, I was going to say the same thing about the $5 per review at Franklin Goose but you did it already! Oh I entered giveaways for 3 months and just one my first diaper last week and then yesterday Won Clean B.
